Visit the towns of south-west France that acquired a reputation as a fashionable destination for the rich and powerful, becoming Europe's premier coastal resort area at the end of the 19th century.
Itinerary
This private French Basque Coast day trip from San Sebastian takes you just across the border into France, where elegant seaside towns and Atlantic views set a different rhythm for the day. We begin by crossing into the Basque province of Labourd, heading north along the coast from San Sebastian.
Along the way, there is time for a short stop in Hendaye, where the wide beach opens onto the Atlantic. From there, the journey continues along the scenic coastal road known as La Corniche — a winding stretch of cliffs and open views, with the Pyrenees rising just inland.
The route leads on to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, where we visit the market and the Church of Saint John the Baptist, before enjoying a relaxed walk through its lively pedestrian streets, lined with small local shops.
The day continues in Biarritz, once a quiet fishing village and later a favorite retreat of 19th-century European aristocracy. Today, it remains one of the most elegant towns on the coast, where historic hotels, surf culture, local restaurants, and everyday life come together in an easy, unforced way.
After a short drive, we return to Spain and stop in the border town of Hondarribia, one of the most beautiful walled villages in the Basque Country. Its medieval walls and historic old town are beautifully preserved, giving the place a character that feels both lived-in and timeless.
We explore both sides of the town — the old quarter within the walls and the fishermen’s district below, known for its colorful houses, flower-filled balconies, and easygoing local atmosphere, with excellent restaurants and pintxo bars along the way.
Just across the border, the French Basque Coast feels like a natural extension of San Sebastian — familiar, yet distinctly different. On our private French Basque Coast day trip from San Sebastian, you explore elegant seaside towns with a local guide who adapts the pace and route to you.

"We spent a fun and informative day with Andoni. He was an excellent tour guide showing us the sights, while sharing his vast knowledge of the places we visited and their customs.
