Itinerary
This San Sebastian to Bilbao day trip is an easy, enriching way to discover Bilbao with a local guide by your side. Starting from your accommodation in San Sebastian, we design the day around your interests — from iconic landmarks to quieter corners that reveal the city’s true character.
After a scenic one-hour drive, we arrive in Bilbao, the capital of the Basque Country and its largest city. We begin the tour in the historic Old Quarter (Casco Viejo), wandering through lively streets, centuries-old churches, traditional shops, and La Ribera Food Market, the largest indoor market in Europe.
From there, we follow the Nervión River, where Bilbao’s architectural transformation unfolds. Along the way, we admire elegant neoclassical buildings such as the Arriaga Theatre and City Hall, before reaching the contemporary icons that reshaped the city — the Calatrava Bridge, the Isozaki Towers, and the Iberdrola Tower, the tallest building in the Basque Country.
The highlight of the day is, of course, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. You’ll explore the museum independently at your own pace; an audio guide is included with your entrance ticket.
Built on a 32,500-square-meter site in the heart of Bilbao, the Guggenheim is an extraordinary blend of sculptural forms, limestone blocks, titanium curves, and glass walls that flood the interior with light. After the visit, we continue discovering Bilbao’s creative side with landmarks such as Azkuna Zentroa (Alhóndiga), redesigned by Philippe Starck, and the Euskalduna Conference Centre.
For art lovers, optional stops may include the Fine Arts Museum, home to works by Goya, El Greco, Francis Bacon, Eduardo Chillida, and more. If you’re staying in San Sebastian and looking for a smooth, well-paced experience, this private San Sebastian to Bilbao day trip fits naturally into your journey.
