This full-day tour combines a morning hike to Mt. Ernio with the visit to the fishing town of Getaria where you can enjoy the best charcoal grilled fish & seafood.
Itinerary
After a 30 minutes drive from San Sebastian, we will begin our ascent from a small hermitage near Iturrioz. The way up through the normal route of Mt Ernio offers no problems, it’s mainly a gentle slope hike: you don’t need to be an athlete, just make sure you’re in good physical conditions and to wear good shoes. In any case, the effort will be worthwhile because the summit we will discover why this place is called the “balcony of the province” and one of the most visited mountains in the Basque Country. After an easy hike, we will arrive to Zelatun fields, and we will face the last stretch of our hike to the top of the mountain where we will find a few sections that are quite steep as well as a few rock steps. After we take a few pictures in the summit we will slowly come back down to the starting point.
Afterward continuing the tour we will take a scenic inland road we will drive through Zarautz, a resort town with a long beach and promenade where the pioneers of surfing in the Basque Country first emerged here in the sixties, to make a stop in the charming village of Getaria. Despite being very small it has a well-deserved reputation for its grilled fish restaurants, the Txakoli wine, and its two illustrious sons: the famous fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga, and Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first man to circumnavigate the earth. Before coming back we will visit the extensive green fields packed with vineyards of the local white wine, Txakoli, overlooking the sea.
